Most remodeling horror stories start the same way: a number agreed to before anyone really knew what was being built. Then the discoveries start, the change orders pile up, and the relationship sours. The problem usually is not the builder or the homeowner — it is the missing plan in between.
So here is exactly how every Aurum Standard project is planned and run, from first conversation to final walkthrough. No mystery, no fine print.
It starts with a call or a message about what you are thinking — a kitchen that does not work, a bathroom that has seen better decades, an addition for a growing family. We talk through what you want, what you have budgeted, and what matters most. If we are not the right fit, we will tell you that now rather than three weeks into design.
You will never get a price in this conversation, and you should not want one. Anyone quoting your project before seeing it is guessing.
We come to the house. We measure, photograph, and look at the things that determine what is actually possible: the structure, the mechanicals, the electrical panel, the plumbing runs, the foundation. A kitchen is not just cabinets — it is where the drain lines run and whether the wall you want gone is holding up the second floor.
This is also where we talk honestly about budget. Remodeling costs what it costs, and we would rather calibrate expectations against reality now than hand over a proposal built on wishful thinking.
Before any number exists, there is a written scope: every room, every surface, every fixture, every finish, spelled out line by line. The materials and fixtures that drive the price get chosen here — tile, cabinets, counters, plumbing fixtures — because a proposal without selections is a proposal with placeholders, and placeholders are where budgets go to die.
This is the unglamorous part of the process and the most important. Changes made on paper cost nothing. Changes made after demolition cost everything.
Only when the scope is complete do we price it. The proposal shows what you are getting, what is included, what is explicitly excluded, and what assumptions we are making. If something is unknown — what is behind a wall, what is under the floor — we say so in writing and explain how we will handle it, rather than burying it and surprising you later.
You should be able to hand our proposal to another contractor and get an apples-to-apples comparison. If you cannot, the proposal is not finished.
In New Jersey, nearly every real remodeling project needs a municipal permit, and every municipality runs its own process — different forms, different timelines, different inspection sequences. We handle the permit applications, drawings, and inspections as part of the project. Work starts when the permit is issued, not before.
A note on hiring anyone for this kind of work: New Jersey requires home improvement contractors to be registered with the state. You can verify any contractor — including us — through the Division of Consumer Affairs HIC license lookup. Our number is 13VH14291800. Check it. We encourage it.
Before demolition, you get a schedule: start date, major milestones, and a realistic completion window. Remodeling involves inspections, material lead times, and subcontractor coordination, so the schedule has contingency built in rather than pretending everything will go perfectly.
During the project, you always know what is happening this week and what is next. One point of contact, straight answers, and no discovering surprises from your neighbor before you hear them from us.
The build follows the plan. At the end, we do a punch list walkthrough together — every room, every detail — and nothing is finished until that list is. Final payment comes after you are satisfied, not before.
We are a new company, and we are direct about that. We do not have decades of projects to point at — so the process has to carry the weight. Every step above exists for one reason: so you always know what was decided, what happens next, and what things cost before they happen.
